Home to Japan's Technological Industries
Many of Japan's high-tech industries, such as the automobile, aviation, machine tools, fine ceramics, and industrial robot industries, are based in and around Nagoya. It is home to the largest and most established ceramic industries in Japan. It is also a center for Japan's furniture and textile industries. The Nagoya area is responsible for approximately 1% of the world's industrial output.
A Wealth of Art and Culture
From 1610, the policies of the famous Japanese shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, Lord of Nagoya Castle, and his successors encouraged the growth of cultural arts such as Noh and Kabuki Theater, Japanese dance, the tea and incense ceremonies and flower arrangement. All of these traditional arts can be enjoyed in Nagoya even today. The ceramics, textile, dyeing, and carpentry industries evolved to meet the needs of these thriving art forms.
Design
City
Nagoya has always had a history of well thought-out town planning, and today is recognized as being outstanding among the major cities of Japan. Its lattice street network has made it a model of Japanese urban design, and the past decade has seen a doubling in the amount of natural greenery lining the streets as part of the city's policy which stresses the importance of amenity in urban design. For nearly 400 years, the cultural arts have provided a link between new technologies and tradition. In recognition of this, in 1989, the Nagoya City Assembly declared itself a Design City.
Convention City
Another major city policy is to enhance Nagoya as a convention city. Being designated as an International Convention City by the Ministry of Transport of Japan, it has hosted an increasing number of important conventions.
